Manmukh

"That is how I got my name when I entered this world, a last, welcome addition to my family, three years after Ravi: Piscine Molitor Patel." - Life of Pi, Yann Martel, Pg. 12.

In this chapter we are shown that the narrator is in fact Pi, the main character in which the book is written about. We are also introduced to two new characters. The first, and most important addition would be Mamaji, who's real name is Francis Adirubasamy. Mamaji was a business partner of Pi's father, and soon became a close family friend. I would say that most of Mamaji's time was spent with Pi. The chapter contains alto of examples of the two spending time with each other, mostly while swimming. Mamaji taught Pi to swim; not as an average swim in the ocean type, but a professional swimmer. Pi talks about swimming in an Olympic pool with Mamaji. Pi refers to Mamaji as his "aquatic guru". From reading this chapter I have infered that Mamaji is probably more of a father figure to Pi. Also in this chapter we were introduced to Ravi, Pi's brother. I can sense a small amount of competitiveness between Pi and Ravi, as brothers usually contain.

An "Upgrade"

Okay, so I kinda got tired of the other format of "The Life of Pie", So I decided to buy another format. Same material inside, different dimensions. The new book now has 319 pages rather than 401, so the countdown will change. Now time to read chapter 3!

Driven

"Speaks quickly, hands flitting about. No small talk. He launches forth." -Life of Pi, Yann Martel, pg. .

This chapter tells us about a man that lives in Scarborough. The man is slim, 5 foot 5. Younger than 40. Dark hair, eyes, and complexion. Possibly tunnel vision. I believe that the man has drive.

393 more pages.

Intelligence

"I have nothing to say of my working life, only that a tie is a noose, and inverted though it is,it will hang a man nonetheless if he's not careful" -Life of Pi, Yann Martel, pg. 6.

In this chapter, we find out that the narrator has a deep passion for animals, majoring in Zoology. The narrator is a very intelligent man, who doesn't give up; graduating top of his class and "[getting] every possible student award from the Department of Zoology." Now, we do learn quite a bit of information about the Three-Toed Sloth (almost an ethogram!) But I feel as if that information is irrelevant to the story, and is only present to get you to know the narrator, and to show the importance of his passion for animals. The narrator reveals that he currently resides in Canada, but at one point lived in Pondicherry, India .We also find out that the narrator has been in some kind of "accident" that landed him in the hospital. I feel as if the narrator is starting the story with his current condition (after the story takes place). He speaks of having scratches and being in a critical condition for a while.

8 pages down, 393 to go.

Here We Go...

In English, we were asked to choose a book, and respond to the book via blog. I am choosing to read the book "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. Now, I'm not going to lie, when I was handed the book...the size overwhelmed me a tad. I am not a very big reader. I'm more of a "Why read a book, when you can just watch the movie" type of guy. Now, I am aware that recently "Life of Pi" has been made into a major motion picture and has received great praise and tremendous reviews. I plan on watching the movie after finishing the book, so the movie doesn't spoil the book. Although this book does have 401 pages and 100 chapters, it will be completed, and responded to, by the end of the quarter.

Also, I was asked to respond to the cover of the book. The book that I received has a cool cover. I particularly enjoy the contrast from cool to warm colors.

Still intimidated by the size of this book.
