Intelligence

"I have nothing to say of my working life, only that a tie is a noose, and inverted though it is,it will hang a man nonetheless if he's not careful" -Life of Pi, Yann Martel, pg. 6.

In this chapter, we find out that the narrator has a deep passion for animals, majoring in Zoology. The narrator is a very intelligent man, who doesn't give up; graduating top of his class and "[getting] every possible student award from the Department of Zoology." Now, we do learn quite a bit of information about the Three-Toed Sloth (almost an ethogram!) But I feel as if that information is irrelevant to the story, and is only present to get you to know the narrator, and to show the importance of his passion for animals. The narrator reveals that he currently resides in Canada, but at one point lived in Pondicherry, India .We also find out that the narrator has been in some kind of "accident" that landed him in the hospital. I feel as if the narrator is starting the story with his current condition (after the story takes place). He speaks of having scratches and being in a critical condition for a while.

Here We Go...

In English, we were asked to choose a book, and respond to the book via blog. I am choosing to read the book "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. Now, I'm not going to lie, when I was handed the book...the size overwhelmed me a tad. I am not a very big reader. I'm more of a "Why read a book, when you can just watch the movie" type of guy. Now, I am aware that recently "Life of Pi" has been made into a major motion picture and has received great praise and tremendous reviews. I plan on watching the movie after finishing the book, so the movie doesn't spoil the book. Although this book does have 401 pages and 100 chapters, it will be completed, and responded to, by the end of the quarter.

Also, I was asked to respond to the cover of the book. The book that I received has a cool cover. I particularly enjoy the contrast from cool to warm colors.

Still intimidated by the size of this book.
